BRIEF HISTORY OF MAYFIELD VILLAGE The following is a brief background of how Mayfield Village came to be the community it is today. June 14, 1819. The Township of Mayfield was founded and the first town meeting was held. At that time the township consisted of Mayfield Village, Gates Mills, Mayfield Heights, Highland Heights, and a small part of Lyndhurst. We were known as a township for nearly a century, then as the Village of Mayfield, today as Mayfield Village. At that first town meeting, twenty voters elected thirteen office-holders who undertook the responsibility of budgeting the $3.88 in the treasury. Our treasury has escalated - it is almost $3.8 million today. March 21, 1921. Mayfield Village became incorporated on this date. Our first ordinance, "An Ordinance to Provide for Rules for the Government of the Council" was enacted and signed by Mayfield's first Mayor, Harry Lockemer. Since that date, hundreds of ordinances and resolutions have been enacted. Since so many of the ordinances must be referred to on a daily basis, the most important ordinances have been codified - published in a large book known as the Codified Ordinances of Mayfield Village. In the mid 1800's, a blacksmith shop, a school, a church and a general store could be found at the intersection of S.O.M. Center and Wilson Mills Roads. In 1969, the Mayfield Township Historical Society was founded. Members and other volunteers created a special Sesquicentennial Book rich with the Village's history. Today, a stately gazebo, the Mayfield Village Civic Center, Village Shell and a small shopping plaza encompass the intersection. The Village Hall, Police Department and Senior Center/Community Room are adjacent to the Gazebo. A Fire Station (dedicated in 1996) is close by, and the Building and Service Departments are located just a little farther north. Mayfield Village is part of the Mayfield City School District along with Gates Mills, Highland Heights and Mayfield Heights. Mayfield Center Elementary and Mayfield High Schools are located within the confines of the community. Mayfield High School boasts a state-of-the-art indoor field house and swimming pool. Visitors to Mayfield Village will find that it still has much of the rustic charm of its early years. The North Chagrin Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks covers nearly one quarter of the 4.2 square mile Village. Beautiful Sunset Pond, picnic areas and miles of hiking trails are located within the North Chagrin Reservation. Wiley Park is located at the site of the Service Department. A baseball diamond, volleyball, basketball and bocce courts, a playground and picnic area are some of Wiley Park's amenities. Several years ago, the Village acquired 10 undeveloped acres from Cuyahoga County for use as open park land. In addition, across from the North Chagrin Reservation is the beautiful new Mayfield Village pool--Parkview Pool--which opened in 1999. A new playground was added next to the pool. Also adjacent to the pool are two soccer fields and a Wetlands Preserve with a one-mile circular path. A new ballfield is under construction (August 2004) Mayfield Village has many fine residential neighborhoods graced with homes of various styles and spacious yards. One attractive industrial park, Beta Drive, is located within the community. Many volunteers serve on several active committees in the Village. Most of the organizations hold monthly meetings and host a variety of special events throughout the year. Some of the events include the Arbor Day Ceremony, Ice Cream Social, Turkey Raffle, Mother's Day Pancake Breakfast, Fabulous 50's Classic Car Cruise Night, Fourth of July Celebration, Summer Concerts at the Gazebo and Holiday Tree Lighting and Menorah Lighting ceremonies. Additionally, the Commission on Aging holds weekly activities for senior residents and the Parks & Recreation Board offers a variety of activities for children and adults throughout the year. The Mayfield Township Historical Society is housed in the handsome Bennett VanCuren Home adjacent to Wiley Park. Painstakingly restored with loving care by dozens of volunteers, the home is a living museum that captures the spirit of Mayfield's past. We hope this brief history has piqued your curiosity to discover more about our lovely Village. Mayfield Village combines the best amenities of urban and rural life. We embrace the daily challenge to sustain and enhance the unique character of our community. We think you will agree that Mayfield is a wonderful place! Bruce G. Rinker |
