Happy New Year - 2006

The Mayfield Township Historical Society will celebrate its 30th Anniversary this year.  We believe we have accomplished the goals set forth by our Founder, Irene Meden, and our charter members, by preserving the Township's heritage.  Our 159 year old Bennett-Van Curen Historic House and Museum contains local artifacts, displays, and the library has genealogies and historic data, of Mayfield Township, dating to its establishment in 1819.

The house is hometo the Mayfield Quilters workshop, forever busy, and the Mayfield Village Garden Club that has kept the grounds lovely with the help of the Mayfield Horticulture School students.  We will soon display our first artifact, donated in 1976, by Albert Judge, a former Mayor and longtime resident of Mayfield Hts., the restored 1858 Cuyahoga County map.  It is rare and may be one of a kind.

The Historic House has undergone major renovation and preservation since it was moved on April 6, 1987.  This year weather sealing was a prime factor in our on going maintenance plan.  We have much to be proud of and are pleased to share it with everyone.

The subscription Turkey Raffle was successful, and we raised $975.  The five happy winners received their prizes for their holiday feast.

We shared a lovely and tasty Christmas Pot Luck Dinner with the South Euclid Historical Society.  We hope to keep these events an on going event.

Interaction with Mayfield Center School's third graders continues with a January visit scheduled.  About 80 students are expected learning about the area history.

Please take note of the changes in the annual dues.  We have increased the individual dues to $10 per person, and our family rate is $20.

We congratulate Mayor Peg Egensperger on her retirement as Mayor of Mayfield Hts.  She is a charter member of our organization and she has always supported the work of the Society.  We congratulate Mayor Virginia Swanson of Highland Hts., too, on her retirement.  These ladies have served our communities as both Mayor and council members, long and well.  We hope to they have time to visit us in coming years.

This is Quilt Show year, October 13, 14, & 15, 2006.  "Remembering Williamsburg" is our theme.  We always start early on pans to collect and present the lovely quilts made by the creative hands of avid quilters.  Old, New, Traditional, and Modern designs are welcome, and we hope to share your treasures with our visitors.  Get your needle threaded, and be ready for our 12th Biannual Show.  We will have publicity and information, on the event, during the months preceding the show.  Applications for entries will be available soon.

Our 7th President, All Scaccia, has completed four terrific and eventful years.  We thank him for his hard work and faithful service to the Society.  Installation of new officers will be at the February 8th meeting.
