History of Mayfield Township Historical Society
The Mayfield Township Historical Society was founded by our first President, Irene Meden, in September of 1976 as a direct result of the tremendous interest shown in the community's activities during the July 4th, 1976 Bicentennial Celebration. Old Mayfield Township consisted of Gates Mills, Highland Heights, Mayfield Heights, Mayfield Village and a portion of Lyndhurst. The Society's' goals are to preserve and restore and to educate our community in the rich heritage of Mayfield Township for our generation and those generations yet to come. Families who settled here, nearly 200 years ago, in 1805, were descendants of those who first came to America to settle nearly 200 years before that. Some of these same families are still living in or near Mayfield Township today. In 1986, the Society learned that one of our oldest homes, the 1847 Jacob Bennett house was to be demolished. With about 6 weeks of concerted effort, the cooperation of the owner and developer, the overwhelming support of the entire Hillcrest area Municipal, businesses and residential communities and several Cleveland Foundations and area newspapers we were able to raise approximately $75,000 to save the house located at S.O.M. Center and Wilson Mills Roads and have it moved to a site in Wiley Park where it stands today. In ten years, with about 100,000 hours of volunteer time, toil and expertise, the house has been restored. The Society members have held fund raisers, had quilt shows and pieced and sewn nearly 100 quilts to support this project. The Mayfield Village Garden Club has made our grounds a show place, winning numerous awards with their handiwork. Donations of artifacts, historic documents and books and the monetary support of our municipalities and interested patrons have made this July 6th, 1996 Grand Opening possible. We celebrate our 20th Anniversary along with the Village of Mayfield's 75th Jubilee and the City of Cleveland Bicentennial Birthday. The Mayfield Township Historical Society meets the second Wednesday of the month from September thru May, except January, at the Mayfield Village Community Room at 8:00 p.m. Membership is open to all. The Historic House will have monthly hours beginning this fall and groups may tour on appointment. Out of the past, into the present and on to the future - The Mayfield Township Historical Society.
