November 26, 2013 Meeting Minutes

The Grove Committee met on Wednesday, November 26, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Civic Center.

Present: Garry Regan, Blythe DiCicco, Dave Hoehnen, Rick Hall, Ron DiNardo, and Steve Jerome                          

Absent: Pat Andrzejczyk

Also in Attendance: Diane Wolgamuth (Director of Administration), Bill Thomas (Recreation Director), Jim McKnight (Landscape Architect), Scott Sipos (Lands & Buildings Foreman), Patsy Mills (Mayfield Village Council)

Mr. Regan opened the meeting and advised the Committee that he had made the planned presentation to Council and thought that it was well-received.  Mr. Regan also reported that notification had been received from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture that funding had been approved for the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival to perform at The Grove in 2014.

3-year Business Plan & Recommendations

The Committee discussed the items that should be included in the business plan.  Mr. Regan proposed that the 2014 season be billed as the “Under the Stars” series.  He also proposed that Friday evenings be reserved for community and local talent. 

Jim McKnight presented a preliminary lighting plan and the Committee discussed the following options:

  • Low-level lighting along the path (with outlets)
  • Up-lights in trees
  • Pole lights on the hill
  • Possible down-lighting on mature trees
  • Outlets for the stage and vendor areas


Mr. Sipos suggested that the entire electrical loop be installed in 2014 with light fixtures added later.  The Committee agreed that this was a practical approach.  Mr. Regan stated that he believed that basic electrical and lighting for the stage and safety lighting were the priorities.

The Committee discussed running water lines for potential skating and vendors.  Mr. Hall suggested that the Committee first determine its mission or vision before getting into the details of infrastructure.  The Committee discussed where they envision The Grove will be in three years, how it will be operated and staffed, and the role of the Committee.  Mr. Thomas stated that when he came on Board as the Village’s Recreation Director, the responsibility for programming was transferred to him as the professional, and the Parks & Recreation Board became an advisory board.  This arrangement has been successful and still exists today.  Ms. Wolgamuth suggested that grant funding might be available to pay a programming and facilities professional.

The Committee discussed the events held in 2013, the major expenses for those events, and potential programming and budget for 2014.  The Committee also discussed ideas for additional infrastructure including a band shell, signage and bike racks.

Mr. Hoehnen asked about trees and Mr. Sipos advised that, in addition to the eight donated trees, the Service Dept. would be planting 60-70 more trees in Spring 2014. 

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
