General Information:
The Building Department oversees residential
and commercial building construction. The Building Commissioner
reviews house plans for conformance with building codes and
performs on-site inspections to monitor compliance with approved
plans. The Building Department is state certified to inspect all
types of construction.
Building Permits
Building Permits are required for all
building construction including accessory structures such as
decks, pools, sheds, fences, patios etc. Permits are obtained
through the Building Department

Fencing - Requirements
If you are planning to install, alter or
relocate a fence, you must obtain a permit from the Building
Department. Site plan to show house, property lines and
proposed fence line posts/wire must be inside of property line/good side faces
neighbor. Residential - only four types permitted: chain link, split rail,
board on board, and picket. Six-foot height limit in rear and side yards (no 6'
chain link), 42" in front yards (only split rail/picket.) Fencing used to harbor
a "dangerous" or "vicious" dog as defined by Section 505.11 must be constructed
in accordance with Chapter 505 of the Codified Ordinances. The plan
review procedure takes approximately 1 week.
Garage Sales--Permit
required to hold sale & install signs
You must secure a permit from the Building
Department to hold a garage sale. (The permit is $5.00.) Two
garage sale signs are permitted--one on your property (where the
sale is being held) and one on your street corner.

Signs
Contact the Building Department directly to see
what the sign standards are for your particular need. You will
need to secure a permit for any type of sign.
Political Signs
Political Signs are permitted for a period of
no more than thirty days before an election. They must be removed
no later than the day following an election.
Parking - Commercial
Vehicles
Commercial vehicles may not be parked on
residential property.
Sidewalks and Driveways
All sidewalks and driveways within the public
right of way shall be kept in a proper state of repair. All
sidewalks shall be kept in a clean condition at all times.
Property owners or occupants must keep sidewalks free from snow
exceeding 2 inches.
Grass and Weed Control
Lawns and landscaping should be maintained so
as not to cause a negative or deteriorating effect on the
surrounding neighborhoods. Property owners with excessively high
grass or weeds will be given five days written notice to cut or
destroy the high grass or weeds. If there is no compliance, the
property owner will be cited.

on Property (Front/Side/Rear)
Additionally,
- Contractors must be Registered
- Permits are needed for Real Estate/Garage Sale signs
- Commercial Vehicles are prohibited in Residential
Areas.
